Location: Albuquerque, NM (RELOCATION REQUIRED)

Position overview:

The Fire Protection Engineerserves as a technical consultant and authoritative expert at the Bureau Regional and Agency levels on a broad range of structural fire protection systems that require specialized fire protection approaches. To include authoritative viewpoints on the methods, techniques, and procedures required within the agency to effectively implement a comprehensive structural fire protection program.

Responsibilities and duties:

  • Review construction plan sets, specifications, hydraulic calculations, battery calculations, cut sheets for compliance with NFPA codes and also with Agency wide design criteria, policies, procedures and guidelines.
  • Serve as resident expert on fire protections systems within the office as it pertains to code compliance and design.
  • Provide Agency staff with immediate answers to NFPA code related questions in regard to fire protection systems, provide code references and cite specific NFPA code in order to fully support, document and interpret code as questions arise in the field by Agency staff, facilities staff and project managers.
  • Study and research into NFPA codes to further understand and apply codes to construction design documents and provide expert level interpretation of NFPA codes to Agency staff.
  • Serves as a technical consultant and authoritative expert on a broad range of structural fire protection systems that require specialized fire protection approaches. Such advice includes authoritative viewpoints on the methods, techniques, and procedures required within the agencyto effectively implement a comprehensive structural fire protection program.

  • Identifies, reviews, and recommends solutions to problems of a major or controversial nature relating to the efficient and economical design of a wide variety of fire protection systems throughout Agency.

  • Conducts technical reviews of building construction design development documents, preliminary construction documents, completed construction documents, final construction documents, specifications and shop design submittals for new construction and major rehabilitation or repair of facilities, and existing facilities for compliance with Agency adopted codes, policy and mandated standards.

  • Conducts fire safety evaluations, inspections, surveys, and reviews. The conduct of these evaluations require effective application of knowledge and experience in safety engineering and design, construction design, National Fire Codes, and OSHA requirements.

  • Conducts final inspections of contract construction, including new construction, renovation, alternation, fire protection, and life safety systems and recommends contract modifications that meet safety standards to minimize risks to human life and property damage.

  • Studies and evaluates: (1) proposed projects, work locations, equipment and operations, and recommends safety features or controls based on professional practices, principles, and methods, (2) methods of safety and health training, and (3) protective equipment devices.

Required education, knowledge and skills:

  • Knowledge of the fundamental engineering principles, concepts and practices.

  • Knowledge and experience with structural fire protection to serve as the authority for responsibilities involved in the development, direction, implementation, and review of the Agency Structural Fire Protection Programs and activities.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of site planning, building design and construction means, methods and codes, scheduling, material and labor cost estimating sufficient to evaluate general compliance environmental health, safety and protection requirements.

  • Average agility and dexterity. Duties will include moderate walking over rough, uneven or slippery surfaces, recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, climbing ladders or similar activities, recurring lifting of moderately heave objects less than 50 lbs. and regular visits to construction sites.
  • Must pass a pre-employment background check
  • Ability to acquire a security clearance.

  • Bachelors Degreein Engineering

  • Experience with NFPA 5000 guidelines
  • 10 years' related experience
  • Valid drivers license
  • Travel and relocation may be required
