Position Description: Position Summary The National Radio Astronomy
Observatory (NRAO) announces an opportunity for full-time Gift Shop
Sales Clerk with our Education and Public Outreach (EPO) team at
the Very Large Array (VLA). The Sales Clerk will be responsible for
providing excellent customer service and processing sales
transactions . This will also includ e , operating point of sale
system , shipping and receiving of merchandise, problem solving and
restocking inventory . In addition to competitive pay, NRAO

employment. NRAOs retirement benefit contributes an amount equal to
10 percent of a qualified participants base pay. No contribution is
required of the employee; we also offer an optional supplemental,
tax-deferred plan for employee retirement contributions. Job Duties
Summary Key duties and responsibilities will include:
- Welcom e Visitors.
- Answers questions in person or on phone about NRAO and the VLA;
directs more detailed questions to appropriate sources.
- Processes sales using point of sale system, Altru .
- Cares for stock on sales floor, places new merchandise on
shelves, racks and or stands. Keeps stock orderly and dusted.
- Assists with physical inventory counts. Reports problems in a
timely manner.
- Performs clean-up in gift shop, visitor center, and facilities
as needed during hours of operation. Opens and Secures gift shop at
beginning and end of day.
- Direct customer service and sales activities in store; resolve
cust omer issues and concerns.
- Proactive compliance with NRAO and government safety policies
and procedur es in own work area is expected . Work Environment The
VLA Site is a remote scientific/industrial facility at 7000 feet
elevation. Works in office environment, must be able to work at a
computer with detailed and complex alpha and numerical information.
Position Requirements: Minimum Education High School Diploma / GED
Minimum Experience At least one year of retail experience and
working with the public. Competency Summary Mu s t be able to w o r
k i n d e p e nd e n tl y a n d r e l i a b l y. Prior experience
with credit card processing software and Point of Sale software
preferred . Excellent written and verbal communication skills,
including public speaking; and the ability to communicate
comfortably and effectively with the public, educators, students,
senior managers. Physical Requirements Will be required to stand
and sit, and may be required to lift 25 pounds or more on occasion.
Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in
writing. Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance
vision, and depth perception. To ensure the safety and wellbeing of
observatory staff, the GBO/NRAO will require Facilities Access
staff and staff assigned to a Safety Sensitive position to be
vaccinated against covid-19. Special consideration may be
considered for medical or religious exemptions. Additional
Requirements The Observatory requires staff to be fully vaccinated
against covid-19 to access our facilities. An offer of employment
