R&D Electrical Engineer for Navigation and Control Applications with Security Clearance

What Your Job Will Be Like Are you passionate about your work and dream of utilizing state-of-the-art facilities to explore solutions? Do you want to join a dynamic team that solves significant issues for our nation's security? The Navigation Guidance and Control department is seeking an embedded software engineer/developer proficient in the C/C++ programming languages having experience in software development for embedded real-time computers running modern real-time operating systems; and having familiarity with the application of agile software development methods. We are currently developing the real-time flight control software for hypersonic glide body prototype vehicles which are intended for transition to industry for production, and ultimately use by the United States armed services. Each prototype strives to take additional technological steps forward and are scheduled to fly on 24-month centers for the foreseeable future. Concurrent with the prototype development Sandia will also build, test, and evaluate several copies of the most recent design and then delivered to various US Military branch services for testing on a variety of different platforms. The demand signal associated with all this exciting work embodies a large amount of embedded computer engineering activities. Our current multi-disciplinary team comprised of Aerospace, Electrical, and Computer Engineers requires additional computer engineers to service the body of work that is assigned to the NGC flight controls team. Periodic travel may be required to support field integration and flight system test activities. Such activities typically occur at rocket launch facilities located in Alaska, Hawaii, and Virginia. Associated trip durations range from a few days to several weeks depending on the assigned role and responsibilities. On any given day, you may be asked to: * Design and implement avionic flight components supporting flight systems applications * Design and implement avionic tester apparatus * Support realization of hardware-in-the-loop hardware and software emulators * Test avionic components and flight control subsystems in relevant environments * Travel to the launch range to support vehicle flight test preparations * Perform gathering and analysis of data using tools such as Matlab and LabView * Develop and apply Simulink models to real time simulation systems * Apply specialized test equipment, such as GPS Satellite Constellation Simulators, in high fidelity simulation systems * Interact with valued sponsors and fellow National Team members Qualifications We Require * A bachelor's degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering from an ABET accredited university * Well-rounded educational curriculum content including analog and digital design, microprocessor applications, electromagnetic theory, communications, and controls * Lab experience with the use of common tools such as oscilloscopes, logic probes, and logic analyzers * Software programming experience with either C, C++, Java, or Python; or Matlab Scripting language * Proven verbal and written communication skills * The ability to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level clearance Qualifications We Desire Ideally, your background would also include: * Advanced (Master's or PhD) degree in Electrical or Computer Engineering * Applications experience with real-time embedded software engineering at the hardware level, including I/O driver software, interrupt service routines, and networking protocols * Strong background in Radio Frequency (RF) circuits and transmit/receive systems * Experience in application of fundamental Systems Engineering principles About Our Team The Navigation Guidance and Control (NGC) Department 5426 provides technology solutions and support to both Offensive and Defensive Military Systems development projects within the Integrated Military Systems Program at Sandia. Hardware and software technologies are developed, integrated, and tested to provide flight control solutions for missiles and hypersonic reentry platforms. Typically, these systems support the Missile Defense Agency, Army, Navy, and other Department of Defense Agencies. Our applications cover a broad spectrum of applications; from advanced aerodynamically controlled vehicles dropped from aircraft, to maneuvering hypersonic warheads, to ballistic missile systems. All the activities require the extensive use of real time embedded computers and custom real-time software for the realization of affiliated fully-integrated flight control system solutions. The NGC group is significantly involved in modeling and simulation activities in support of these same application areas as well as activities for the Sandia Space Mission Program.
