You'll collaborate with accomplished scientists and use industry-leading equipment and facilities and gain compelling experiences in preparation for a career in this exciting area.On any given day, you may be called on to:Contribute to a multidisciplinary, materials-focused research effortAssemble and test sodium batteries and/or flow batteriesCoordinate, perform, and/or analyze data from materials characterizationPublish innovative research in leading peer-reviewed technical journalsPresent cutting-edge research at technical conferencesDue to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsiteQualifications We RequirePossess, or are pursuing, a PhD in a chemistry, materials, physics or engineering-related field (PhD must be conferred within five years prior to employment)Laboratory experience in electrochemistry, electrocatalysis, or battery testingAble to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearanceQualifications We DesireExperience with various electrochemical techniques (CV, EIS, GITT, galvanostatic cycling, etc.)Strong background in electrochemical materials characterization, including battery testing and evaluation, ideally related to sodium, lithium, or similar batteriesFamiliarity with flow batteries, their components, and cell assemblyFamiliarity with materials characterization techniques, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and electron microscopy (SEM/EDS, etc)Experience developing new electrochemical test fixtures or apparatus to improve battery performance or elucidate materials limitationsExperience using and maintaining an inert atmosphere gloveboxAbility to interact with team members of diverse technical backgroundsDesire to conduct independent, focused researchCandidates should be highly motivated, team-oriented individualsAbout Our TeamThe Nanoscale Sciences Department 1874 conducts collaborative groundbreaking research to advance the understanding of materials at the nanoscale and enable the collaborative development of creative solutions for Sandia's broad and evolving National Security and Energy Missions. Our research activities have broad impact; and typically generate peer-reviewed, high-profile journal publications and presentations at professional scientific meetings.Our main work focuses on the discovery, understanding, and exploitation of properties and structures unique to the micro- and nanoscale, broadly directed along two thrusts:Electrochemical Materials Science and Applications (e.g., energy storage, corrosion, chemical sensing);Nanostructured Materials Science and Applications (e.g., hazardous materials capture/storage, sensing, membranes, water treatment, catalysis)Our team is committed to a nurturing environment compatible with a broad group of people and perspectives in accordance with the changing makeup of the workforce. The PhD must have been conferred within five years prior to employment.Individuals in postdoctoral positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
