NGC&S Advanced Development, is currently seeking an experienced R&D Aeronautical Engineer with navigation, guidance, and control, sensing, and modeling and simulation interests.The successful applicant will support aerospace applications involving development, implementation, and testing of flight control systems for hypersonic flight vehicle applications.On any given day, one may be called upon to:Lead integrated, multi-disciplinary teams providing technology solutions and support to aerospace related military systems of the futureDeliver technical product outcomes to projects requiring NGC&S flight algorithms and softwareDevelop and apply physics-based simulations for complex hypersonic flight vehicle platformsThis position requires moderate travel in support of customer interactions and flight testing of vehicle prototype flight control system applications.Qualifications We RequireA Master's degree in Aerospace Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering with an Aerospace Emphasis, plus 1 year related experience; or a PhD in Aerospace Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering with an Aerospace EmphasisOr an Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in a relevant field, plus 5 years related experienceExperience using high level programming languages, such as C, C++, and JavaExperience with simulation tools (e.g. Mathworks Matlab, Simulink, and Simulink Real-Time)Documented coursework completion in the field of Spacecraft Dynamical systems and aero-control design, including state-space control theoryThe ability to occasionally travelThe ability to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearanceQualifications We DesireAn academic background in guidance algorithmic approaches, such as Proportional NavigationA working knowledge of structural dynamicsExperience with navigation systems, including Military GPS receivers and inertial measurement unitsA strong background in Spacecraft Dynamical systems theory and related Mod/Sim applications experienceModeling and simulation of complex dynamical systems, such as thrust vector control servomechanismsExperience with electrical avionic components and related system implementationsExperience with digital computer methods for numerical solutions of partial differential equationsDocumented coursework completion in the study of aerodynamicsGeneral knowledge and experience with the application of Systems Engineering conceptsWriting skills demonstrated through professional publicationsStrong leadership and interpersonal skillsProficient with using Mathworks Matlab scriptKnowledge of Kalman filter (estimation) theory and signal processing techniquesHands-on experience using Simulink to implement 6DOF simulations for flight vehicle applicationsMechanical design skills related to aerospace systems structures and avionic componentsA general background in Model-based Systems EngineeringExperience with deploying simulations on parallel or cluster computer configurationsApplications experience with industry standard Government Off the Shelf (GOTS) and commercial software commodities, such as GMAT, SIMDIS, and GIANTMissile system integration test and evaluation experienceFamiliarity with Model-based Systems Engineering conceptsFamiliarity with real time embedded software developmentAn active DOE Q-level security clearance; or other equivalent active security clearance such as DOD Top SecretAbout Our TeamThe Navigation Guidance and Control and Sensing (NGC&S) Department, 05444, provides technology solutions and support to development projects within the Integrated Military Systems Program at Sandia. Hardware and software technologies are developed, integrated, and tested to provide flight control solutions for missiles and hypersonic reentry platform applications. Typically, these systems support the Missile Defense Agency, Army, Navy, and other Department of Defense Agencies. We are focused on maturing next-generation technologies and our applications cover a broad spectrum of applications including GPS and inertial navigation, alternative-navigation sensors, communication and flight termination systems, advanced aerodynamically controlled vehicles, maneuvering hypersonic vehicles, and ballistic missile systems. Related applications require the extensive use of real time embedded computers and custom real-time software for the realization of fully integrated flight control system solutions. The NGC group is significantly involved in modeling and simulation activities in support of these same application areas.
