Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.:We are seeking an unmanned aircraft Systems Engineering/Integration/Implementation focused professional with experience or interest in the design, fabrication, maintenance and flying of fixed wing and multi-rotor unmanned systems (drones). You will assist with wide-ranging, challenging technical problems in physical security and counter-autonomy R&D and T&E. These problems involve structuring and executing activities that include preparation and use of unmanned aircraft and other systems, to help us make informed decisions for our sponsors on items impacting national security.On any given day, you may be called on to:+ Work with cross-functional teams in designing, sourcing, building, testing, and maintaining unmanned systems, especially fixed wing, VTOL, and multi-rotor aircraft.+ Assist in preparing hardware and software systems and in structuring and executing UAS flights associated with threats to national security, for a wide range of customers, in both field and laboratory settings.+ Serve as a visual observer, base station operator, or pilot-in-command for flight operations.+ Manage portions of our aircraft fleet, ensuring compliance with all environmental, safety, security, and regulatory requirements, and ensuring up-to-date fleet information.+ Lead and maintain critical project documentation including NEPA, Work Planning and Controls, Flight plans, Aviation Safety Plans, etc. in partnership with technical staff.+ Assist efforts to automate the collection and processing of test data, including hardware and software, and capturing information logs from flight controllers and onboard data loggers.+ Collaborate in a learning environment.+ Develop new skills and capabilities to contribute to the diverse and growing needs of our projects.Required:+ Bachelors in a STEM field or;- equivalent combination of education and experience (AS + 4 years)+ Ability to obtain a DOE Q clearanceDesired:+ FAA Part 107 Remote Pilot Certificate or inclination to obtain+ Detail and safety-focused approach, including experience with safety planning and documentation around higher risk activities+ Demonstrated skills in fixed wing aircraft construction and flight operations (e.g., significant hobbyist in the technical area)+ Working knowledge and understanding of Aeronautical or Aerodynamic principles+ Experience in design, engineering, fabrication, maintenance, repair, and testing of unmanned systems such as, multi-rotor, VTOL, rockets, gliders, or similarly complicated systems+ Experience working with various flight controllers, firmware, and tuning of settings+ Background with aircraft build techniques such as airfoil lamination, composite material layup, vacuum forming, 3D printing, laser cutting, hot-wire foam cutting, wood gluing, etc.+ Experience creating design definition documentation including CAD drawings, bill of materials, assembly instructions, etc.+ Ability to work effectively in a diverse team settingDepartment Description:Our mission is to counter autonomous threats and improve the performance of physical security systems that protect high value national assets.
