Job SummaryThe Directed Energy Applications Department (05498) is part of the Directed Enterprise that also includes the Directed Energy Missions Department (05497) and the Directed Energy Assessments Department (05499). Areas of interest for this enterprise include high-power electromagnetic systems, compact pulsed power systems, radio frequency sources and antennas, electronic effects phenomena, photoconductive semiconductor switches, compact tunable laser sources, laser-induced plasmas, and laser imaging and diagnostics. The Directed Energy Applications Department executes research and development for applications of directed energy technologies and associated sources, sensors, and components. Work environments range from laboratory work in state-of-the-art facilities to field work at local and remote test sites. Work products range from studies and analyses to delivery of beyond-state-of-the-art prototype hardware to support our customer base and move Directed Energy technologies to the warfighter.Knowledge, Skills, AbilitySandia is required by DOE to conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Applicants for employment need to be able to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship. Experience with RF test equipment and test procedures, including mechanical/electrical assembly and characterization/operation of RF antennas for communications, telemetry, and/or high-power applications. Experience building electrical circuits from schematics and performing circuit layout, prototyping, and wiring. Experience with the use of hand and machine tools to modify or fabricate custom hardware.Preferred Qualifications (Desired) Experience determining laboratory equipment requirements, set up equipment, perform tests/experiments, collect data, and generate test documentation for laboratory experiments.Experience with mechanical/electrical assembly and maintenance/operation of high-voltage, pulsed power systems across a variety of circuit topologies.Experience with photoconductive semiconductor switches (PCSSs), particularly for pulsed-power applications. Experience with SolidWorks, SolidWorks Sim, LabVIEW, MATLAB, and/or Mathcad.Experience with logistics, packing, loading, and transport of test equipment.Experience with vacuum/pressure system schematics, components, component specification, and assembly and installation of pressure systems.Experience with folio and crane operation and safe rigging practices.Demonstrated ability to work alone and in a team environment.Demonstrated skills at writing and presenting design and test information using Microsoft Office products (Excel, Word, and PowerPoint).Job SpecificationsOn any given day, you may be called on to: Design, fabricate, and characterize novel RF and high-power microwave stems to solve problems of national importance Collect, analyze, interpret, document and present data Specify requirements for, procure parts for, assemble, operate, and maintain data collection systems Participate in laboratory experiments or field experiments of RF and high-power microwave systems
