What Your Job Will Be Like We are seeking a highly motivated RD SE, Mechanical Engineer to join our dynamic, fast pace environment, collaborating with scientists and engineers to support a vital component in our nation's nuclear deterrent. On any given day, you may be called on to Perform computational simulations using multi-physics codes to advance the designs of neutron generators, assist with manufacturing processing, and demonstrate our fundamental understanding of device operation. Use CAD software tools to make geometric models and gather relevant physical property data to perform simulations. Work with a variety of multi-physics simulation tools, such as ANSYS, COMSOL as well as codes developed by Sandia (e.g., Sierra). Work with circuit modeling software, such as PSpice. Qualifications We Require A bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, applied physics, chemical engineering, or related field plus 5 years of relevant experience Experience with computational modeling techniques Qualifications We Desire Experience using modeling techniques to aid and guide problem solving efforts A master's or Ph.D. in electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, applied physics, chemical engineering, or related field. Familiarity with computational simulation methods for modeling electricmagnetic fields, shock response, adhesion and cure stresses. Experience with circuit modeling tools Experience with working with a variety of Sandia's Sierra codes Demonstrated skills in both oral and written communication (presentations, peer-reviewed papers, etc.) Knowledgeable in design-of-experiments and optimization algorithms Ability to work with multi-disciplinary teams A current DOE Q-clearance About Our Team The mission of the Neutron Generator Applied Science and Technology Maturation Department is to conduct focused research towards the discovery, integration, and protection of the scientific knowledge behind the design, production, and sustainability of neutron generators. Our work uses computational modeling, materials science, chemistry, plasma science, high voltage arc physics, advanced manufacturing methods, and neutron testing to support manufacturing and design. Along with our internal expertise, we also collaborate with a variety of internal organizations and external institutions to accomplish our goals. We apply this knowledge in creative and innovative ways for understanding the health of the existing stockpile, to design for the future, and to support national security. Research Areas within the Department include properties of materials containing tritium, thin film structure of rare earth and transition metalsmaterials, surface and interface properties, gas-solid interaction, hydride formation, and hydride thin film properties, encapsulation and mold release processes, plasma physics and modeling, and additive manufacturing investigations of metals and ceramics.
