Learn more about Sandia at: http://www.sandia.gov*These benefits vary by job classification.What Your Job Will Be LikeThe Accident Consequence Modeling and Analysis Department at Sandia National Laboratories is seeking a Software Solutions Architect (job title: R&D Computer Science) to develop software architectures for software used in safety assessments for space nuclear launch and nuclear power plant licensing and safety assessment. In this position, you will work as part of a multidisciplinary team that supports programs in the area of nuclear-powered space craft and nuclear power plant safety and emergency planning.The primary responsibilities of this role include working with the program manager to design and architect software solutions, develop and carry out project plans, establish software development processes and team procedures, support software verification and validation procedures and provide technical expertise in code development.On any given day, you may be called on to:Design the architecture for software applications used to support department missions and ensure the architecture meets design requirementsPerform as a member of the coding team to develop code that implements the design architecture determined as part of the software architecting phaseParticipate in agile stand-up meeting and scrum reviewsWork with subject matter experts to understand project needs and requirementsDetermine the most appropriate technology stack and programming languages to meet software requirements and implement the approved architectureJoin program manager in project meetings with the federal and commercial sponsor to provide technical expertiseDue to the nature of the work, the selected candidate must work onsite at the Sandia Albuquerque site at least 50% of the time.Qualifications We RequireBachelor's in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a closely related field, plus 8 years of directly relevant experience, or a graduate degree and 4 years of relevant experienceExperience as a lead software developer or Principal InvestigatorExperience designing software architectures to include determining technology stack, programming languages, and data management schemes.Experience with React, JavaScript (JS), and JavaAbility to obtain and maintain a DOE Q-Level Security ClearanceQualifications We DesireDemonstrated ability to learn programming languagesExperience with some combination of C++, C#, Node.js, Python and Fortran, Electron, VB.net, VB6Experience with desktop application developmentExperience with developing and scripting software on LinuxProven ability understand legacy application software, determine what it is doing, and migrate the capability to a state of practice / modern application frameworkExperience working with code repositories, such as Gitlab and bug tracking systems, such as FogbugzProject management certifications such as the PMPStrong mentorship skills and proven ability to work with and mentor junior programmersExperience working in a collaborative environmentAbout Our TeamThe Accident Consequence Modeling and Analysis Department (ACMAD) supports the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and Department of Energy (DOE) by providing experts in the Modeling of the Atmospheric Transport, Environmental, and Economic impact of released Nuclear Material as well as expertise in severe accident phenomenology; for both Emergency Response, Emergency Preparedness, Licensing applications, and basic scientific research. This team consists of high performing multi-disciplined scientists and engineers that work in a collaborative environment to develop state of art computer codes and analyses of severe accidents in nuclear power plants and nuclear facilities and the environmental transport of radiological releases, as well as the health and economic consequences of such releases. The team interacts broadly with both our domestic Federal customers as well as domestic and international customers, stake holders and customers with the goal of making nuclear power as safe as possible in a complex world faced with existential threats from climate change, terrorist threats and natural disasters.Posting DurationThis posting will be open for application submissions for a minimum of seven (7) calendar days, including the posting date. Sandia reserves the right to extend the posting date at any time.Security ClearanceThis position does not currently require a Department of Energy (DOE) security clearance.Sandia will conduct a pre-employment drug test and background review that includes checks of personal references, credit, law enforcement records, and employment/education verifications. Furthermore, employees in New Mexico need to pass a U.S. Air Force background screen for access to Kirtland Air Force Base. Substance abuse or illegal drug use, falsification of information, criminal activity, serious misconduct or other indicators of untrustworthiness can cause access to be denied or terminated, resulting in the inability to perform the duties assigned and subsequent termination of employment.If hired without a clearance and it subsequently becomes necessary to obtain and maintain one for the position, or you bid on positions that require a clearance, a pre-processing background review may be conducted prior to a required federal background investigation. Applicants for a DOE security clearance need to be U.S. citizens. If you hold more than one citizenship (i.e., of the U.S. and another country), your ability to obtain a security clearance may be impacted.Members of the workforce (MOWs) hired at Sandia who require uncleared access for greater than 179 days during their employment, are required to go through the Uncleared Personal Identity Verification (UPIV) process. Access includes physical and/or cyber (logical) access, as well as remote access to any NNSA information technology (IT) systems. UPIV requirements are not applicable to individuals who require a DOE personnel security clearance for the performance of their SNL employment or to foreign nationals. The UPIV process will include the completion of a USAccess Enrollment, SF-85 (Questionnaire for Non-Sensitive Positions) and OF-306 (Declaration of for Federal Employment). An unfavorable UPIV determination will result in immediate retrieval of the SNL issued badge, removal of cyber (logical) access and/or removal from SNL subcontract. All MOWs may appeal the unfavorable UPIV determination to DOE/NNSA immediately.
