Position Description: Position SummaryIn anticipation of an award for additional project work, the National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) is recruiting for a senior Systems Engineer (SE) to join the Next-Generation Very Large Array (ngVLA) project. The successful candidate will work closely with the projects lead SE to implement the projects systems engineering processes, help to develop the system architecture and work closely with subsystem teams to oversee their SE processes. The candidate is expected to be familiar with international SE best practices and able to work proactively and independently. The ngVLA is a large radio telescope facility that spans many different disciplines, which require tailoring of the process to individual parts of the project. The project spans the full life cycle from concept definition through to operations. The position is preferably based at the NRAO office in Albuquerque, NM or at the Science Operations Centre in Socorro, NM. Requests for placement at the Charlottesville, VA office may be considered. No contribution is required of the employee; we also offer an optional supplemental, tax-deferred plan for employee retirement contributions.Job Duties SummaryThe key responsibilities and duties of the SE consist of but are not limited to:

  • Assist in defining a system architecture with a consistent product structure, interfaces and behavior.
  • Modeling of the system architecture using the SysML modeling language.
  • Establish and maintain traceability of requirements across the hierarchy and to the system design.
  • Contribute to specific aspects of the system design as required (e.g. reliability, EMI or safety)
  • Oversee the development of a complete set of system interface control documents.
  • Develop system integration and verification plans.
  • Work with subsystem teams to oversee the implantation of the SE life cycle, including subsystem reviews and the implementation of the various processes for the different life cycle phases.
  • Oversee the baselining and change management processes.
  • Help to establish and improve system life cycle management processes and tools.Work EnvironmentWork is typically conducted in an office environment in a research and development context. Some field work is required during the construction, integration and verification phases of the project.Position Requirements: Minimum EducationA Bachelor's Degree in engineering or related field is required.Minimum ExperienceAt least 5 years working as a systems engineer in integrated project teams on related projects.Preferred ExperienceExperience in an application domain for the establishment of hi-tech large-scale infrastructure related to radio astronomy, such as radar, communication systems or optical telescopes. Experience in model-based systems engineering and SysML. Exposure to the technology domains of electromagnetic, RF, digital signal processing, mechanical software engineering and civil engineering. Experience working across life cycle phases including design, qualification, industrialization, production, construction and transition to operations. Experience with model-based systems engineering methodologies and tools.CompetenciesStrong interpersonal, teaming, and leadership skills.
