Position Description: Position SummaryWould you like to write mission-critical software for one of the most famous and accomplished scientific instruments on the planet? Would you like to be part of a highly skilled team of software engineers supporting scientists who are pushing the boundaries of our knowledge of the universe? The National Radio Astronomy Observatory (NRAO) announces an opportunity for a full-time Software Engineer. The software engineer will be primarily responsible for maintaining and improving software for operation of the VLBA radio telescope and the DiFX software correlator. The software engineer will also have a secondary Linux administration responsibility maintaining and patching Linux clusters used to host the DiFX software correlator. The VLBA is an array of 10 radio telescopes spread across the United States. The software engineer will be a member of the New Mexico Systems (NMS) Group which is part of the Data Management and Software (DMS) Department. The position requires US citizenship. The position will be based at the Science Operations Center in Socorro, NM on the campus of the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology (). Socorro is a small, historical town in the Rio Grande Valley, 75 miles south of Albuquerque. With over 300 days of sunshine each year, Socorro and surrounding areas offer ample access to outdoor recreation. NRAO's retirement benefit contributes an amount equal to 10 percent of a qualified participant's base pay. Job Duties SummaryResponsibilities are anticipated to evolve and expand and will initially include, but are not limited to:Support & maintain VLBA operations softwareSupport & maintain the DiFX software correlatorLinux administration of clusters used to host DiFXEnsure critical documentation is deliveredWork with VLBA operations, analysis and science staff to ensure the functionalities are workingWork EnvironmentThe position is located at the NRAO in Socorro, NM. Work is typically performed in a research or development environment. Must be able to operate a personal computer. May occasionally work at high altitudes. Must be able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing. Occasional travel will be required. Position Requirements: Minimum EducationBachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, or a related field. Preferred EducationAn advanced degree is highly desired. Scientific degree or background in astronomy is also desirable. Minimum ExperienceOne year of experience in in the development of software applications. Preferred ExperienceFive years of progressively more responsible experience in the software engineering field. Experience writing software for high performance cluster computing and experience administering computing clusters. Salary and position level will be determined based on the candidate's qualifications. Preferred Competencies Excellent knowledge of software engineering concepts, practices and proceduresExcellent knowledge of C/C++Experience with Linux administration, networking and securityExperience with distributed programmingSecurity+ certification or the ability to acquire certificationGood knowledge of Python, shell scripting and JavaGood knowledge of Object oriented programming and frameworksGood math or physics backgroundStrong interpersonal and communications skillsExcellent oral and written communication skillsDemonstrated ability to learn new areas and apply learningStrong troubleshooting and problem-solving abilities Application Instructions: Apply online at the careers page.
