The successful candidate for this position will apply integrated technical judgment-which requires using the scientific method to recognize and formulate problems, to collect data through observation and experimentation, and to formulate and test hypotheses-to anticipate, innovate, and deliver solutions to Sandia National Laboratories missions. Roots the work in the fundamentals of science and engineering while applying a deep understanding of engineering and scientific principles. Creates and applies scientific theories and laws and engineering methods used within scientific and engineering disciplines to develop or demonstrate new designs, concepts, materials, machines, products, processes, or systems. Uses physical and computational simulation, analysis, and evaluation as inherent activities of development. Plans, conducts, and executes Sandia-s science and engineering programs within the spectrum of fundamental research, development, or demonstration. Researches issues in such areas as physical mechanics, fluid dynamics, hydraulics, thermodynamics, vibration, physical metallurgy, power engineering, kinematics, and heat transfer systems for metals, plastics, composite, and combination structures. Applies research to the design, development, analysis, and testing of mechanical and electromechanical systems, instruments, controls, engines, and machines. Analyzes the ability of systems to withstand stress imposed by conditions such as temperature, load, motion, and vibration and performs analysis of system operation to design requirements. Qualifications We Require You will have a graduate degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Physics, or demonstrated equivalent skills through work experience. Your background will include either shock physics analysis or non-linear solid mechanics. You have exposure andor experience in large-scale, parallel computing would be helpful. You can demonstrate good presentation skills and the ability to work in a team environment. You can obtain and maintain a DoE Q clearance. Qualifications We Desire Ideally, your background will also include some of the following You have experience in analysis using codes such as CTH, Zapotec, and Presto with some background in code development for these applications. In addition, you have knowledge and experience in nuclear weapons, reentry vehicles structures and materials, and conventional munitionspenetrators would be beneficial. About Our Team Sandia National Laboratories is a key member of the Missile Defense Agency (MDA) team in the area of lethality, post-intercept debris generation, signature prediction, and related hypervelocity modeling. Our primary customers are the U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command and the Missile Defense Agency. The MDA lethality programs at the laboratory are tasked with developing lethalityvulnerability criteria for target reentry vehicles, characterizing impact phenomena for target typing and kill assessment, and missile defense-related modeling pertaining to advanced discrimination and kill enhancement. In addition, the department supports advanced solid dynamics and shock physics analysis for other DoDDOE weapons applications. The department performs coupled hydrodynamic-structural modeling of complex geometries to predict both early-time response and late-time break-up for missile defense related applications. We have teamed with both industry and other laboratories to perform both ground and flight test experiments and events.
